Renault Scenic beats Tesla!

10 July 2024

Renault Scenic E-Tech 100% electric wins the What Car? electric SUV group test, beating the Tesla Model Y to the number one spot

The Renault Scenic E-Tech 100% electric has beaten what many consider to be the benchmark EV, eclipsing the Tesla Model Y in the latest electric SUV shootout completed by What Car? magazine.

The renowned magazine and website pitched the pair against each other as part of a comprehensive, 12-page group test, which saw the Scenic E-Tech 100% electric not only topple the Tesla Model Y but win the three-car test overall, also defeating the Kia EV6.

Making the result even more impressive is that of the vehicles tested, the Scenic E-Tech 100% electric had the lowest cost by some margin, with What Car? reporting:

“The Scenic range kicks off at a keen £37,495, undercutting its rivals by thousands... indeed, we had to wheel out the most expensive version of the new Scenic, with its enormous ‘Long Range’ battery and range-topping Iconic trim, to make this a fair comparison with Britain’s best-selling electric SUV, the Tesla Model Y.”

What Car? road test team praised the reinvented, pure-electric Scenic for its attractive price, generous equipment, inviting interior and substantial range

The attractive purchase cost has not been to the detriment of the standard specification either, with What Car? awarding the Scenic E-Tech 100% electric the full five stars for equipment. The title’s expert testing team were equally impressed with the usability of the current ‘Car of the Year’, giving the maximum five-star score for its range.

With the Scenic E-Tech 100% electric designed for modern families, the spacious cabin also received a great deal of praise, What Car? adding: “The Scenic’s
interior is a nice place in which to travel, featuring a tasteful blend of ambient lighting, soft-touch materials and an eclectic range of fabrics that spread from the dashboard to the headlining.”

“The Scenic’s front seats come with not only electric adjustment but also a massage function. This ease of adjustment, combined with a slightly elevated driving position (somewhere between the EV6 and Model Y)
and comfortable, supportive seats, make the Scenic the one to go for when faced with a long journey. You’ll enjoy the best forward and side visibility in the Scenic, too. However, the Scenic has a bit more rear head and leg room than either of its rivals, and its seats offer significantly better under thigh support than the Model Y’s.”

Summing up on why it judged the Scenic E-Tech 100% electric to be better than the Tesla Model Y and other rivals, What Car? concluded: “Sometimes a radical rethink is required, and Renault’s reinvention of the Scenic has turned out to be a masterstroke. This is a comfortable, practical, easy-mannered car that, when you consider its lengthy range and generous roster of kit, is incredibly well priced. It wins this test at a canter – and cheaper versions might even score five stars.”

Guillaume Sicard, Managing Director, Renault UK, said: “We have always said that the Scenic is a game-changer and here is the official proof, with one of the industry’s most respected automotive titles recognising that it is superior to what has long been considered the unbeatable benchmark in its sector. With the test assessing each car across comprehensive criteria, customers of the Scenic E-Tech 100% electric can rest assured that it is a complete all-rounder that is the best of the best.”
